Hello there, friend! Thanks for stopping by!

I would like to introduce you to the Melissa hat.

The Melissa Hat

Melissa is a reversible hat, so named after its striking bee-like feature. Melissa (μέλισσα) is the Greek word for honey bee! Worked primarily in reverse stockinette, it has a textured panel that starts wide at the bottom of the body and merges to a point at the crown. The stitch pattern is completely reversible; on the one side, this feature looks like a beehive, while on the reverse it looks like bees in flight. So you don’t just get one hat but two in one!

When I first sat down to design this hat, I had a couple of things to work with: a skein of yarn I had dyed myself and a craving for a textured pattern. I also knew I wanted to produce a pattern that was simple but not boring to knit and fun but not too in-your-face to wear. And now that I’ve said that I realize that this probably comes from my own preferences of what I enjoy knitting and wearing. In theory I always want to knit complicated intricate garments. In reality I don’t have the time to knit those things, and the time I get is never the peaceful alone time necessary for working on rows and rows of knitting that require my full attention. So I usually opt for something in between, a little more than just plain stockinette, but not all over lace either. Melissa is just that! It’s playful, but also very intuitive, and, therefore, a nice easy project to work on while watching your favorite show on TV! And, because it’s worked in worsted weight, it knits up super quick!

The stitch pattern I picked was one I had been in love with for a while. I’ve owned the Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book for over a decade now. I had seen this stitch pattern, and maybe even given it a try once or twice before, but hadn’t quite figured out what to do with it. In my search for stitch patterns on Pinterest, I came across the same “flight of the bumblebee” pattern, and knew I had to use it in this design!

And that’s how Melissa was born, folks!

As previously mentioned, I used my own hand dyed yarn for this design (coming to the shop soon). It used up one whole skein of all natural super soft sustainable merino, in my Heather colorway in worsted weight. It knit up so beautifully, and it is so soft and warm!
